  181. I am using the MFJ 1270B TNC with the MFJ implementation of the 9600
  182. baud modem. I seems to work ok for the most part. The only complainrt
  183. I have is that the beast seems to change TXD/SLOT/PERSIST parameters
  184. on it's own while running in KISS mode. I haven't been able to get 
  185. to MFJ with questions (their tech phone is always busy). I have a
  186. friend who is running the same version of JNOS as me (my EXE file is
  187. a copy of his) but with a Kantronics data engine and HIS parameters
  188. don't change. The KDE is a nice box biut is much more expen$ive than
  189. the MFJ box. If you don't mind some of your TNC parameters being
  190. jangled in KISS mode, the MFJ is at least worth a look...

  246. I'm very interested in digital radio. I've taken several graduate EE coarses
  247. in digital communications, so I have a decent grasp of the theory. However, 
  248. I have no real-world experience with radio. It looks like digital amateur 
  249. radio might be just the ticket. Are there any seasoned amateurs out there
  250. who can help me get started? (I already read the FAQ)

  252. Who do I contact to get a license? Is there a test? Do I have to know morse
  253. code?

  255. Where can I learn more about the equipment used? How much will it cost? Is 
  256. it realistic to design and build some of it myself? I think I would learn
  257. more that way.

  273. There is!  It just came out.  Its called RadFax 0.9.  Written by Juri Munkki
  274. and available on sumex.stanford.edu.  It uses the built in sound digitizer
  275. of the newer macs to do the modem part and only does WEFAX and only receives.
  276. But, for the shareware fee you get the source code.  I have yet to
  277. get my powerbook together with my SW reciever, so I haven't gotten a picture
  278. yet.  Maybe someone else can get it and do a review?
  279. (It's also sitting in the incoming directory at UMICH, so it should be availablethere too soon.)

  318. WAMPES, an updated version of ka9q works fine under Linux.  If you have 
  319. problems with configuration scripts, send E-Mail to the maintainer of
  320. that code, Olaf Erb.  His address is in the distribution of WAMPES.
  321. You can get it from UCSD.edu /pub/hamradio/tcpip/wampes I think.

  323. Also, Alan Cox, the maintaner of the networking code for Linux has just
  324. released AX25 built into the kernel.  If you like, I can send you a ready 
  325. built kernel, and the docs on how to get it going.  Send me E-Mail if
  326. you are interested in that.  I think that's your best bet.  It does 
  327. IP over AX25, and normal AX25 directly from the kernel to a KISS TNC.
  328. I've had no problems at all.

  349.  There are 2 problems with your station, the first being the low
  350. power of the HT. Unless you can run 20 watts or more, you are
  351. a classic "hidden transmitter", and will not be heard
  352. by many of the other packet stations. So, packet collisions
  353. will occur, because of you, and much of the network traffic
  354. will slow down because of retries.
  355.  The second thing (just an assumption by me), is that the antenna
  356. in use is the rubber ducky on that HT. If  this is true, it will
  357. pickup computer noise by being too close. You need an outside antenna
  358. to eliminate this noise. An outside, omnidirectional antenna,
  359. placed as high as yoiu can, will also help problem number 1
  360. get better. With this, more stations will hear you. You will
  361. now hear them transmitting, and you wont be transmitting on top
  362. of them, screwing up the frequecy. Good luck. -pat

  430. For those that have the $99 TI DSK, I placed my port of the W9GR
  431. audio digital signal processor software on ucsd.edu in
  432. hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming. Look for DSPDSK.EXE and DSPDSK.TXT.
  433.  
  434. If you are interested in learning some finer points of audio DSP,
  435. obtain this code and work through it.
